Search Results Overview
The search results page includes not only the outcome of your search, but also shows your query, display and sort options. See the image below for explanations of a few key fields in the results page.

Search Results

  • Your search terms will appear highlighted in yellow on the results page.
For phrase searches, the individual words that make up the phrase may also be highlighted in the results. These are not counted in the number of results found, rather, they are highlighted for your convenience.

Sorting and Displaying Results   Back to Top
By default, search results are shown in short display and sorted by relevance, meaning the results are arranged based on a measurement of similarity between your query and the content of each record.
Search results can be sorted by:
  • Document date
  • Date document was added to UCSF
  • Number of pages in the document
  • Bates number
To change the way your search results are displayed, choose a sort and/or display option and click "Search" to re-run your query with the new options applied.

These options will persist for the duration of your session or until you choose another sort option.

A session ends when you leave the site or after 4 hours of inactivity.

Bookbag   Back to Top
The Bookbag is a function that allows you to save a document's descriptive information and then download the records to your computer or email them to yourself or to a colleague.
  • Adding documents to your Bookbag saves document records NOT the documents themselves.

  • The bookbag can hold up to 500 records.

  • Closing the bookbag does not affect its contents; the bookbag retains your selection for the duration of your session.

  • A session ends when you leave the site or after 4 hours of inactivity.

  • It is good practice to download or e-mail the bookbag periodically to prevent accidental data loss.
Always click the "Save Notes" button after entering a note for a document record.
When you add a record to bookbag, the following information is saved:
  • Title
  • Author
  • Document Date
  • Bates Number
  • Collection
  • Permanent URL Link to the actual document
Search History   Back to Top
The Search History tab allows you to view and download or email a listing of all searches made in one session. A session ends when you leave the site or after 4 hours of inactivity.
The search history lists the following information:
  • Date
  • Search query syntax
  • Number of results
Click on the query link to re-run the search and retrieve the results.
