Finding Attachments    

While searching the documents, you will encounter e-mail messages, letters or other documents that refer to attachments by name or by description. Finding these attachments may involve a number of different strategies:

  • First look for documents "close" to the original - go to the previous and next documents by clicking on the Bates Number arrows located on the search results page, the document record page and the top of the PDF itself.

Documents in Foreign Languages   Back to Top

To find documents that were written in a language other than English, use the Expert Search page to search for languages in the following fields:


In the British American Tobacco (BAT) collection -
  • search for the following languages by their two letter codes in the Language field (lg:):
      Arabic - ar
      Chinese - ch
      French - fr
      German - de
      Greek - el
      Hindu - hi
      Italian - it
      Russian - ru
      Spanish - es

  • To search for documents in languages not listed above, search the Language field (lg:) for "unkn" in combination with the name of the country in the Country field (ct:)

    (List of BAT Country Names and Historical Country Names)

Examples:
lg:de

lg:ru

lg:unkn ct:Japan


For most collections (except BAT) -
  • directly search for the following languages in the Characteristics field (cond:):
      French
      German
      Japanese
      Portuguese
      Spanish


  • To search for documents in languages not listed above, search the Characteristics field for either "other language" or "foreign language" in combination with the name of the country in the Entire Record:

      cond:"other language" [name of country]
      cond:"foreign language" [name of country]

Examples:
cond:German

cond:French

cond:"other language" Russia

cond:"foreign language" China

The Multimedia Collection contains video and audio tapes, many of which are available for immediate viewing online at Internet Archive



  • Search the Genre field (genre:) for the following specific types of media:

    Ad Agency
    Commercial
    Corporate Communication
    Corporate Meeting
    Debate
    Deposition
    Educational Program
    Focus Group
    Hearing
    Interview
    News & Talk Show
    Political Advocacy
    Press Conference
    Sponsored Event
    Tech Film
    Training Film
    Trial


  • Use the Access field (access:) to find media that is available for immediate viewing online at Internet Archive (IA).

Examples:
genre:"Focus group" - finds multimedia resources described as focus groups

genre:Deposition access:IA - finds multimedia resources described as depositions that are available to watch/hear immediately on Internet Archive
 
Documents Designated as Privileged or Confidential   Back to Top
Seven (7) collections in LTDL - American Tobacco, B&W, Philip Morris, RJ Reynolds, Lorillard, BAT and Multimedia - include records of documents withheld from production due to claims of privilege or confidentiality. See Documents Designated as Privileged or Confidential for more information.


  • To find "privileged" documents, search the Document Status field (st:) for the term "priv" like:
    st:priv

  • To find "confidential" documents, search the Document Status field (st:) for the term "conf" like:
    st:conf

  • To find documents that were considered "privileged" but have since been released for viewing, search the Document Status field (st:) for the letter "U" like:
    st:u

  • To find documents that were considered "confidential" but have since been released for viewing, search the Document Status field (st:) for the term "formerly" like:
    st:formerly

Examples:
st:priv au:Bible - returns records of privileged documents authored by former Philip Morris Chairman and CEO Geoffrey C. Bible.

st:u ventilation - returns formerly privileged documents that have the word ventilation occurring anywhere in the text.

The following are groupings of documents which are subsets of the larger collections. These are known as "Special Collections":

    "Bliley"
    "Minnesota Selected"
    "Roswell Park Cancer Institute"
    "US Dept of Justice"
    Research Collections

    "JTI Smuggling" - a stand-alone collection of Japan Tobacco International documents

  • To find documents within a specific Special Collection, search the Special Collection field (speccoll:) for the subcollection name

    speccoll:[name of special collection]


Examples:

speccoll:bliley* - finds all "Bliley" documents

speccoll:"Minnesota Selected" - finds all "Minnesota Selected" documents.
