Description
The witness, a nicotine pharmacology expert and professor, testified as an expert witness for the defendants. He reviewed his educational and professional background. He discussed how nicotine acts in the nervous system of smokers. He described the numerous effects that nicotine has on the body. He observed that nicotine releases adrenaline, which speeds up the heart. He remarked that nicotine also inhibits weight gain by releasing increasing blood sugars and releasing free fatty acids. He indicated that it also can influence the neurotransmitters in the brain and thereby depress appetite. He commented on animal studies that compared the effects on the brain of nicotine to other drugs. The witness cited a study that suggested that smokers got the most satisfaction from the actual act of smoking, rather than from the drug effect of nicotine.
