Description The defendants' expert witness, an expert in nicotine pathology and toxicology, was deposed by the plaintiffs. He noted that nicotine is not a health hazard and emphasized that the hazards associated with cigarettes stem from the presence of other chemicals and additives. He indicated that the flavor does come from nicotine and said that he believes that people would not like the taste of cigarettes if the nicotine were eliminated. He offered his perspective on why smoking is habit-forming and expressed his reservations about using the term "addiction." He explained why he prefers to use "dependence." The witness declared that the behaviors connected with smoking play at least as great a role as the nicotine. He expressed his belief that people can quit smoking if they want to do so.
