Description
The witness, an employee of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, testified as an expert witness for the defendants. He summarized his credentials and the studies he is currently participating in. He acknowledged that all environemental tobacco smoke research the lab has conducted over the last ten years has been directly or indirectly funded by the tobacco industry. He commented on the testimony he gave to OSHA. He provided information on how smoke and nitrosamines disperse in the air. He indicated that a factor that makes nitrosamines of special interest is that much larger quantities are released in sidestream smoke than in mainstream smoke. The witness explained why he does not believe that anybody should use the term cigarette equivalents. He maintained that lawyers for the tobacco industry have never attempted to direct his research on tobacco smoke issues nor prevent him from publishing data. He stated that he never found any data manipulation by R.J. Reynolds.
