Description
The witness, an chemist at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, testified as an expert witness for the defendants. He provided an overview of his educational and professional bona fides and described the nature and mission of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He indicated that the majority of his 22 years at the facility have been devoted to sampling and chemical characterization of complex aerosols, including tobacco smoke. He reviewed the his roles he had played in various smoking studies. He indicated that he had been asked to provide an opinion about this case and described how he designed a study to replicate Mrs. Wiley's exposure to environmental tobacco smoke while working at the VA hospital. He explained why he concluded that the limited smoking areas meant that her exposure to tobacco smoke from patients after 1979 was probably fairly small. He stated that the information he received from Mrs. Wiley's co-workers is more reliable that the epidemiologic questionnaires generally used in studies.
