Description
British report on the 1980 responses to questions about cigarette smoking in the General Household Survey conducted by the Office of Population Censuses & Surveys. Numbers of smokers and amount smoked were compared across time and by age, gender, and socioeconomic group. Smoking questions were first asked in 1972. Age categories start with 16-19 year olds. Tables are included. Cigarette smoking declined in men, but stayed steady for women. There were also gender and differences in number of heavy versus light smokers and in the changes in these categories over time. Differences in smoking prevalence and behavior also varied by socioeconomic class with a greater decline in the professional vs. the manual groups.
